After spending the last 8 years in the US, an Indonesian man was about to be deported from the US before a last minute reprieve from Federal immigration officials. They issued a stay of deportation just hours before his flight was scheduled to depart. He has filed for political asylum in the US because he fears persecution on return to Indonesia for the fact that he is openly gay.

In addition, he is also an ethnic Chinese and he is Catholic, so this makes him a triple minority in predominantly Muslim Indonesia. His case offers a test to the US immigration system, which is centred around family unification. In this case marriage to a US citizen is not an option for an immigrant who is gay, so there is no chance that he can be sponsored for residency, raising discrimination concerns.
