Jose Antonio Vargas and the Green Card Debate Go On

Pulitzer winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas had unveiled last week that he did not hold a green card and that he was an illegal immigrant. This revelation has faced many opinions and debates on the issue about illegal immigrants.
Holding a green card is the entry to permanent citizenship in the USA. Hence the procedure for obtaining it is equally long and tedious. The many rules that govern this process are vague and sometimes overtly harsh.
According to Vargas, he entered the country at the age of 12 and started living with his grandparents. His mother who was initially supposed to come to USA could not make it because of a law that prevented married children of legal immigrants from coming into the country. His grandparents got him a fake green card and related documents.
Vargas was supposed to get married and get a green card but he was gay and uninterested in green card marriage. His other option was to do menial chores and escape the limelight. Instead he lied to employers and offices and continued to work as a journalist.
He will now be the face of the Dream Act which could provide a conditional permanent residency to all the illegal immigrant students who graduate from high school and who live in the country for more than 5 years with no criminal record. The bill was rejected once but has been reintroduced in the senate in May this year.
